AUDITION NOTICEActors & SingersThe Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society, a
community theater company celebrating its 54th season, will
produce The Mikado is quite simply the most popular comic opera in the English language. It neatly skewers all the pompous forms of English government within a thin veneer of pseudo-Japanese lacquer. Some of Gilbert’s character names from The Mikado have entered the culture on both sides of the Atlantic. We all know at least one “Pooh-Bah,” the “Lord High Everything Else.” This is one of the few G&S operas in which the plot is totally consistent within itself. If the town fathers wish to eliminate capital punishment, there is nothing easier than to promote the next convict condemned to die and make him “Lord High Executioner.” Thus he cannot cut off another’s head until he’s cut his own off – a difficult, not to mention dangerous undertaking. Never mind that the only crime punishable by death is flirting. I said it was consistent – not serious. Producer Mike Storie w Stage Director Christine Goff w Music Director Bernard Kwiram w Chorus Master Alan Lund Auditions for chorus positions plus principal roles (see following pages)
will be held on the following schedule at our rehearsal facility at 522 Dexter
Avenue North (on the East side of Dexter, ˝ block south of Mercer Street.)
Please note that there is only one chorus audition scheduled. If you can’t make it, let us know – we’ll try to accommodate. If you are interested in a Principal or Supporting role, please leave a message at 206-682-0796 or send a message to manager@pattersong.org, to select an audition time on one of the dates listed above, stating your name, address, phone, which role(s) you are interested in, and on which day and time you prefer to audition. We will get back to you with an appointment. For the audition, you may select any Gilbert & Sullivan number that you feel best shows off your talent and it is left to you to make sure that it is representative of the role(s) you are interested in. We only need to hear about one minute of singing. The performer must provide his/her own music. An accompanist will be provided. Please Note: Some performers will be called back for principal roles. At Callback, please be prepared to perform the songs for the role(s) you are interested in which are listed on this site. You may, of course, use any of these songs for your initial audition. The appropriate music for songs is available here or may be obtained from our office. There will also be some dialogue reading and simple stage movement at Callback. Those auditioning for Chorus roles are expected to know the selections listed here for the men’s or women’s chorus. This music may be downloaded from our web page, or you may arrange to obtain a copy from our office at the above number or e-mail address. For the show, we will be using the Dover Scores which will be provided to cast members. Please Note: Those interested in either a principal role or a chorus role must be prepared to be heard for both. For your convenience, the music download page now has links to audio clips of the audition music from our 2001 production. Rehearsals start Monday evening, April 14th at 7pm. This is a mandatory get-acquainted and organizational meeting. A preliminary schedule for the season is included with this notice. You must be able to meet this schedule if you accept a role. This season, all chorus members will be reimbursed $100 and all principal and supporting performers, $200. A huge commitment, but very rewarding.
